Biography Dr. Ali Mohammed Zaki

Biography Ali Mohammed Zaki

Ali Mohamed Zeki is a virus expert from the Faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University. Ali was born on December 1, 1953 and successfully completed his studies at the University's Microbiology Department. Ali's main interest is in the field of molecular diagnosis of viral infections. In the professional organization of the virus expert, Ali's latest research is in the field of MERS Corona Virus. Ali does not have a local partner, but he has a foreign partner from Erasmus Medical Center.

The Corona virus that was identified in 2012 is actually not the only type that Ali Mohamed Zeki has known. Previously, Ali succeeded in diagnosing dengue fever for the first time in Saudi Arabia in 1994. In 1997, Ali isolated a new flavivirus that was born from lice and was called alkhurma. This virus causes dengue fever which is quite severe in patients. When he succeeded in identifying the corona virus that caused MERS, Ali served as the head of the hospital virus laboratory Dr. Soliman Fakeeh, Jedah, Saudi Arabia. Quoted from Nature Middle East, the private hospital had a virus laboratory after handling the case of the Crimea-Kongo dengue fever in 1990. Ali then worked to build the lab by utilizing three empty spaces on the sixth floor of the hospital.

Quoted from The Guardian, Ali initially received a call from a doctor at the hospital where he worked in mid-June 2012. The doctor was treating a 60-year-old patient who had severe pneumonia due to a virus. Ali was then given the task of identifying the type of virus. All the results of tests conducted by Ali showed negative results, so the sputum sample of the patient was then sent to the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. While waiting for the results, Ali did another test which showed positive results. Test results show the virus comes from a family of pathogens called coronaviruses. A virus attack can cause a common cold, but can also cause SARS. Ali then told Erasmus to be vigilant. Erasmus test results confirmed the virus came from the coronavirus family. But the virus is different and has never been seen in the corona virus family before.

After learning about the dangers of the corona virus, Ali uploaded the results of his identification on ProMED, an internet reporting system to share infections and outbreak cases quickly. This system, accessible to researchers and public health offices, enables early warning information to the public. Unfortunately what Ali did bitter fruit, because he was fired from his job when he was returning home to Egypt. "The local government does not like this case to appear on proMED and force the hospital to terminate my contract. Then I am forced to leave my job because of the identification and dissemination of information about the existence of a dangerous virus. But this is my job and the virus is dangerous," Ali said.

The patient known to have MERS died 11 days after being admitted to the hospital. His health was getting worse with shorter breathing, organ failure, and could not be helped by a ventilator. Ali then returned to Egypt after the hospital lab where he worked was closed. Now Ali returns to his academic position as professor of microbiology at Ain Shams University. He hopes to have enough funds to build his own lab and research MERS and corona virus further. But if not, he wants to live quietly carrying out his daily academic responsibilities.
